LE PAPILLON: Celebrating Floyd Sonnier's Acadiana

Dance & live music performances by Ballet Acadiana & The Has Beans

Ballet Acadiana returned to the Grand Opera House of the South in Crowley, Louisiana this spring to perform Le Papillon: Celebrating Floyd Sonnier's Acadiana. In this original performance, Ballet Acadiana collaborated with The Has Beans to bring to life the iconic art of Floyd Sonnier through dance and music. The lower level of the Grand Opera House of the South also featired an integral part of the performance — a Floyd Sonnier art exhibit! A wonderfully unique blend of art, music, culture, and dance, Le Papillon appeals to the whole family.

Classics to Contemporary

Ballet Acadiana returned to the stage in November 2015 with Classics to Contemporary, a collection of both classic and original works, which was performed at the beautiful and historic Grand Opera House of the South in Crowley, Louisiana.

Internationally recognized dancers Arionel Vargas, formerly of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the English National Ballet, and Marize Fumero, formerly of the Cuban National Ballet and English National Ballet and currently with the Milwaukee Ballet Company, joined Ballet Acadiana for this performance dancing alongside local company members. Dadier Aguilera, an award winning dancer and contemporary choreographer trained at the Cuban National Ballet and who has toured and performed internationally with Ballet de Camaguey, Centro ProDanza de Cuba, and Palacio das Artes Dance Company of Brazil, also performed in three of the works presented.

In this performance, Ballet Acadiana presented Pas de Deux from Don Quixote, Pas de Trois from Swan Lake, Mazurka from Coppelia, Majisimo, Carmen, and two original contemporary works. In addition, they performed Epitafio through special permission of Cuban choreographer Ivan Alonso, grandson of the great ballerina Alicia Alonso. The show closed with a walk down memory lane for many in the audience. Dadier Aguilera choreographed a work to a medley of Bill Withers music that got everyone in the mood to sing and sway along. This work was a delight for both dancers and audience members alike!
